COVERING THE TRIAL

The good thing about going to a trial for a book is that you don’t have to read the transcript later, and you certainly don’t have to worry about paying for copies of it. To cover a trial you simply call the clerk of court, find out when a trial is scheduled, show up early so you can be sure of getting a seat, then take notes on what you see and let your tape recorder capture what is said.

The bad news is that if you’re attending the trial, that means there is no verdict yet, and usually no certainty that a successful book can be written. It also means that in all likelihood you don’t yet have a contract to write a book.

If a trial is going to take place in your area, and you have the time to cover it, then fine, go ahead. But if it’s going to cost you money and valuable time to cover a trial, you’re better off waiting until it is over.

Jack Olsen takes it a step further. “I absolutely will not touch a live case,” he says, meaning a case that has not yet been tried, or one that is on appeal. “Getting involved in a case that’s not settled is just asking for trouble.”
